Tom Malone was born on March 29, 1984 ... Was a punter and placekicker at Temescal Canyon High in Lake Elsinore (Calif.) ... Averaged 43.4 yards per punt in 2001 and 9 of his 38 punts pinned opponents inside the 10-yard line ... Also kicked 46- and 47-yard field goals in 2001 ... Overview

Malone, 22, was originally signed by the San Francisco 49ers as a rookie free agent on May 5, 2006, and was released on June 29. The 6-foot, 205-pound punter played for the University of Southern California from 2002-05, where he recorded a 44.0-yard career punting average and placed 95 of his 185 career punts inside the 20-yard line. Malone was a two-time semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award - given to the nation’s top punter - and set a school record in 2003 by averaging 49.0 yards per punt.



College

Played four seasons at USC from 2002-05 ... Malone's 44.1 career punting average (on 183 punts) shares the USC record and is just shy of the all-time Pac-10 mark ... Fiftysix of his 183 career punts traveled at least 50 yards and 95 pinned opponents within the 20-yard line ... As a senior, appeared in 11 games and averaged 41.7 yards on 30 punts, including 11 within the 20-yard line and 5 traveling 50 yards ... As a junior, appeared in all 13 games, averaged 43.8 yards on 49 punts ... Was a semifinalist for the 2004 Ray Guy Award ... Was 1 of 10 semifinalists for the 2003 Ray Guy Award and made the AP All-American second team ... He was named to the 2003 All-Pac-10 first team ...
