Full name - Jonathan Dewayne Smith…Attended Clinch County (Homerville, GA.) High...standout athlete who played quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back…had 710 yards rushing and 386 yards passing while scoring 12 touchdowns as a senior…also made 49 tackles and 10 interceptions…earned All-State, All-Area and All-Region honors…Management major.

Jonathan Smith was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the seventh round (214th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft. Signed by the Patriots as a free agent on September 3, 2006.

2006 Season

2006 (2/0/0/1): Released on Oct. 2, 2006 ... Signed as a free agent on Sept. 12, 2006. 

at N.Y. Jets (9/17): Inactive. Denver (9/24): Played in a reserve role at wide receiver but did not collect a reception. at Cincinnati (10/1): Played in a reserve role at wide receiver and on the kickoff return team in the Patriots' commanding 38-13 victory over the Bengals.

2005 (Buffalo): Did not see action vs. Hou (9/11)… Saw action at wide receiver and on special teams at TB (9/18)…Saw action at wide receiver and on special teams vs. ATL (9/25) … posted one carry and caught 1st pass of the season for six yards … contributed on punt returns, registering two returns for 24 yards, including a long of 17 yards against the Falcons … Recorded two tackles on special teams … Led the team in receiving, posting 2 catches for 30 yards at NO (10/2) … also recorded one kickoff return for 44 yards … Earned first career start at wide receiver as Bills opened in five-wide set vs. Mia (10/9) … returned one kickoff for 25 yards and two punt returns for one yard … Scored first career receiving touchdown with eight-yard touchdown reception in first quarter vs. NYJ (10/16) … caught one pass for eight yards and returned one punt for eight yards. 2004 Season

2004 (Buffalo): Made his NFL debut vs. NYJ (11/7/04) after being signed off the practice squad to the 53-man roster on 11/5, returning one punt…at NE (11/14), on only his second career punt return, and in his second career NFL game, Smith returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter for the team's only points in the game…the TD return made him only the 16th player in Bills history with a punt return for a TD, and first since Nate Clements did it on 11/4/01…it was also, at the time, the 8th longest return in team annals…in only his third NFL game vs. St.L (11/21), Smith recorded his second punt return of 50-plus yards with a 53-yard return…he finished with 62 yards on two returns…recorded his first receptions of his NFL career with two catches for 10 yards at Sea. (11/28)…returned three punts for an 8.7 average with a long return of 26 yards vs. Cle. (12/12)…also rushed the ball one time for eight yards on a direct snap from the center…caught one pass for 11 yards and also returned the first kickoff of his career for 28 yards at SF (12/26).


Versatile big-play performer was Georgia Tech's main offensive weapon in his senior year … In addition to regular duties as a wide receiver and punt returner, Smith also lined up at halfback and quarterback during his career … A standout quarterback in high school, he worked his way into the receiver rotation late in his freshman year … Finished his career ranked second in Tech history with 174 receptions, topped only by Kelly Campbell (195, 1998-2001) … Ranks fourth in school annals with 2,238 yards receiving, surpassed only by Campbell (2,907), Kerry Watkins (2,680, 1999-2002) and Harvey Middleton (2,291, 1994-96) … His 12 touchdown catches rank ninth on Tech's career-record list while his 2,931 all-purpose yards rank 10th … Added 194 yards and a score on 37 carries (5.2 avg.), 22 yards on a kickoff return and 38 yards with a touchdown on 2 of 5 passes … Also returned 39 punts for 477 yards and two scores … His punt return average of 12.2 yards rank fifth in school history … Joined Kerry Watkins (1,050 in 2002) and Kelly Campbell (1,105 in 1999) as the only players in school annals to gain over 1,000 yards receiving in a season.
